Centre stands firm on WhatsApp monitoring

first_imgNew Delhi: Facebook global executive Nick Clegg has proposed a “prospective” mechanism for WhatsApp to act on cases flagged by law enforcement agencies, but the government has refused to budge on its demand for traceability of messages. The issue of traceability has been a flashpoint between the government and WhatsApp, and the Facebook-owned messaging platform has so far resisted India’s demand for identification of message originators, arguing that doing so would undermine its policy on privacy and end-to-end encryption. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscalA senior government official said that Facebook Vice-President, Global Affairs and Communications, Nick Clegg, during his meeting with IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad last week mooted alternatives to absolute traceability of messages, including use of ‘meta data’ and machine intelligence for dealing with the issue, even offering to harness WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook linkages to provide assistance to law enforcement agencies. When contacted, a Facebook spokesperson said: “Facebook cares deeply about the safety of people in India and Nick’s meetings this week provided opportunities to discuss our commitment to supporting privacy and security in every app we provide and how we can continue to work productively with the Government of India towards these shared goals.” Also Read – Food grain output seen at 140.57 mt in current fiscal on monsoon boostA person aware of WhatsApps’s position on the matter emphasised that the platform cannot read messages exchanged as they are encrypted. It is learnt that Clegg in meetings with top authorities, including Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval as well as IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on September 12, reiterated the US tech giant’s stance that it will abide by any lawful request for information by the Indian government, but it cannot read messages exchanged on its platforms. Clegg told the officials that the company can provide ‘signals’ and meta data such as who calls were made to and duration, among others, of lawfully identified users, a source said. The US social media giant has agreed to provide India with ‘meta data’ of any user of its platforms, including WhatsApp, that the government lawfully identifies but has insisted it cannot look into messages exchanged as they are encrypted. India is home to 400 million WhatsApp users and more than 328 million Facebook users. Social media companies in India have drawn flak from the government in recent past over instances of circulation of fake news, breach of user confidentiality, unauthorised data sharing by the apps and concerns over privacy and data security. WhatsApp in particular has been under fire over users misusing the platform for circulation of fake news that have incited mob fury. The Indian government has made it clear that it intends to strengthen the legal framework and make social media platforms more accountable under law.last_img read more

Invest Turks and Caicos launches tonight

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 18 Jan 2016 – The official launch of the Invest Turks and Caicos Agency will happen tonight at the Provo Golf Club and among the features will be remarks by the Finance Minister and the first official meeting of new CEO, John Rutherford, OBE. Rutherford took office since December and has worked in the investment field for 21 years according to TCIG; with experience in the US West Coast and Hong Kong. John Rutherford was chosen from some 125 applicants and the Board, headed by banker, Anton Faessler explained that it is confident that the right choice has been made. There was lots of explanation by TCIG and the Minister for why Rutherford, who is not from the TCI, was selected for the job and how natives can rest assured there are other opportunities at the Agency for them. Rutherford is on record saying he believes other vacancies at Invest Turks and Caicos can be filled by Turks and Caicos Islanders. The newly formed Investment Promotion Agency will handle the main marketing of ‘brand Turks and Caicos Islands.’ It was explained that the specific mandate is to promote and facilitate trade and investment, public- private partnership and other forms of commercial alliances, encourage domestic entrepreneurship, innovation and capital formation, and generally to liaise with government agencies and the private sector in order to streamline the investment process. If the agency lives up to these touted goals, it could be like a balm in Gilead as businesses have for years called on government to ease the process for companies already established in the islands, and to roll out a truer welcome mat for investors. Host of the event which gets started at 7pm is the Minister of Finance, Hon Washington Misick. Eielson AFB to Keep F16 Squadron

first_imgEielson Air Force Base will retain its F-16 squadron even if the installation located outside of Fairbanks, Alaska, becomes the home of two new squadrons of F-35A fighters, officials announced Tuesday.  The Air Force had considered moving the base’s 18th Aggressor Squadron late last year after it named Eielson as the preferred alternative for 48 F-35s slated for the Pacific region. But the service determined that Eielson was “the most operationally sound option, as well as the most cost effective,” said Mark Pohlmeier, acting deputy assistant secretary for installations, according to a press release. The Aggressor Squadron plays the role of enemy forces in training exercises. The likely basing of F-35s at Eielson and the retention of the F-16s represents a sharp turn for the base after previous attempts to remove all of its flying units, reported the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. The turnaround primarily stems from the nation’s pivot toward the Asia-Pacific.The Pentagon recommended shifting the base’s F-16 and A-10 squadrons and putting the base in “warm” status during the 2005 round of BRAC, but the BRAC Commission reversed the proposal to move the Aggressor Squadron elsewhere. Separately in 2012, the Air Force proposed moving the F-16 unit to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage to save money, but the service eventually shelved the idea. This week’s announcement also signals a significant economic boost for the Fairbanks region, as the construction required for the F-35 squadrons will be greater with the F-16s staying put, according to the News-Miner. The unit accounts for 2,300 military and civilian jobs at Eielson. Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

Emotional blackmail works with parents

first_imgMy father has been having an affair with a lady for several years. My mother is a homemaker and she has tolerated this for years. I have got a job now and will soon move to another city. She refuses to move with me. What should I do?Om Prakash, Uttar PradeshWomen are miracles. We tend to tolerate beyond our means sometimes. You surely should try and convince her. If she still doesn’t agree you can try an emotional trick after you’ve settled in your new place. Just call and pretend to have a health issue. Mothers are bound to leave the world behind to take care of their children.  Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Once she’s with you, blackmail her emotionally by highlighting how much you need her. This might work!I have two daughters. My elder one is fair and pretty and the younger one is dark. Our relatives pass comments on this and this affects my younger one badly. How do I handle this?Divya Mathur, New DelhiStop meeting such relatives! In today’s day and age it is just pathetic that someone’s complexion is still a discriminating factor! This is really sad and unwanted. You should ensure that you drill this well into the heads of both your children that colour and looks don’t compose a person’s life. Always highlight small, good things to your daughters and appreciate their talents. If the younger one is ever upset about this, tell her that she is the most beautiful thing that happened to you. Try to understand his reasons for drinking so much. Don’t get into an argument, avoid confrontations if you can. Look and sound hurt but don’t nag. Parents’ tears and sincere requests sometimes have huge healing effects on kids. You can also take some inputs from doctors who can advise you on ways to treat alchoholism. Seek professional help from rehabilitation centres, if needed. Good luck! My best friend and I have fallen for the same girl. We all go to the same college. I don’t know whats going to happen in future! Please help!Name unknownWell, either you both will fall out of this ‘crush’ or either one has to let go in the near future. Another thing that has to be considered – what does the girl feel? This triangular love story sounds interesting but in reality, only those ‘two’ will be together who have similar frequency and wavelength. Love will happen only when the two ‘click’. Also Read – Heavy rain hits traffic, flightsBanerjee tweeted: “I am shocked to see that at a time when the farmers in the country are crying and committing suicide for their loan burden and asking for waiver of farmer loans, the government of India has not even considered that.”On the contrary, the government of India has decided to write off non-performing assets of public sector banks to the tune of Rs 2,41,911 crore, from the financial year 2014-15 till September 2017.”This is unbelievable. We had raised the issue of non-performing assets right at the time of demonetisation. Now the cat is out of the bag and reality bites. Even in Parliament reply, the government says that the details of credit information by a PSB cannot be disclosed. Why is this confidentiality? Whom is the government trying to protect? Is it not a big big big scam?” the Chief Minister said.Welcoming Banerjee’s tweet, Bandyopadhyay tweeted: “There’s the Bengal tigress. Always loud and clear for the people’s rights.
