House Votes to Remove Immigration Measure from Defense Bill

first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR House lawmakers on Thursday voted to strip a controversial immigration provision from the fiscal 2016 defense authorization bill, removing one possible barrier to the measure’s passage this week.Language added to the defense policy bill in committee last month would have encouraged the defense secretary to consider allowing individuals eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to serve in the military. The provision drew heated opposition from conservatives who tried to have it stricken from the bill by the House Rules Committee. Instead, lawmakers adopted an amendment, 221-202, removing the language.Debate over the amendment took place during the first series of votes on amendments Thursday, reported CQ Roll Call. Debate continued into Thursday night, with the House aiming to vote on the underlying legislation Friday.Lawmakers rejected an amendment that would change the statutory requirement for the number of operational aircraft carriers the Navy must maintain from 11 to 10.“Now that’s an arbitrary, restrictive requirement,” said Rep. Jared Polis (R-Colo.), who offered the amendment. “Perhaps they should have more. Perhaps they should have less.”Senior Armed Services members of both parties, including Seapower Subcommittee Chairman Randy Forbes (R-Va.) and the panel’s ranking Democrat, Joe Courtney (Conn.), opposed the proposal.last_img read more

Maserati commits to building electrified sports car at Modena in 2020

first_img 2019 Honda Pilot Elite: A smoother, tech-rich crossover SUV Enlarge ImageEven though it’s a few years old, the Alfieri concept remains a stunner. Here’s hoping the production version looks even half this good. Maserati Maserati’s GranTurismo and GranCabrio are on the way out, and their replacement — based on the Alfieri concepts we’ve seen in the past — will be built starting next year in a modernized version of the automaker’s historic home.Maserati this week announced its intent to modernize its factory in Modena, Italy, reaffirming the FCA Industrial Plan that was unveiled last year. According to Maserati’s press release, it will “be dedicated to the manufacturing of special high performance, high technology sports cars.” Maserati has had a presence in Modena since 1939.The plant will be upgraded starting in the fall. The hope is to have it ready to start cranking out preproduction prototypes of the Alfieri in the first half of 2020. Production models will likely follow in 2021, according to Autocar’s estimates.FCA keyed us into the Alfieri’s aspirations last year. It’ll run on a lightweight aluminum chassis, adopting the curvy good looks of its concept predecessors. While a plug-in hybrid is rumored to be on offer, the real attention will be on the fully electric variant. It’ll have three electric motors, granting all-wheel drive, and it’s estimated to reach 62 mph in about 2 seconds, with a top speed above 186 mph. Yikes. That’s not all Maserati has in store for the near future. It intends to completely revamp its line by 2022, adding new plug-in hybrid variants of the Quattroporte, Levante and Ghibli. At the same time, the Quattroporte and Levante are also slated to get EV variants. There’s also a new midsize SUV on the way, slotting beneath the Levante. Maserati, much like Dutch Van der Linde, clearly has a plan. 20 Photos More about 2018 Maserati Ghibli Maserati previews new century design with Alfieri concept (pictures) Maserati Jeep CherokeeKeeping its top-of-the-list placement, the Jeep Cherokee is 2019’s most American-made car. Refreshed for 2019, the compact crossover now features more tech, better cargo space and a slightly tweaked look. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite. For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Most trims get a nine-speed automatic but the top Touring and Elite trims now use a 10-speed automatic with stop-start technology. The Honda Odyssey is made in Lincoln, Alabama. Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. Forward collision warning with collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control that works even in low-speed traffic, lane-keeping steering assist and road departure mitigation are all standard across the board. Like its MDX counterpart, the RDX is available with the A-Spec styling package. The RDX sports a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Output is stated at 273 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a new (well, reborn) entry to both the Honda lineup and the American Made Index. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Acura MDX is made in East Liberty, Ohio.  68 Photos 4 Car Industry Honda PilotDropping down to seventh place for 2019 is the Honda Pilot. Like its two-row Passport sibling, the three-row Pilot offers parent-focused technology like Cabin Talk as well as myriad standard driver-assistance features through the Honda Sensing tech suite. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. What next for Brexit

first_imgBritain`s Prime Minister Theresa May leaves 10 Downing Street in central London on December 12, 2018 ahead of the weekly question and answer session, Prime Ministers Questions (PMQs), in the House of Commons. British Prime Minister Theresa May was hit by a no-confidence motion by her own party on December 12 over the unpopular Brexit deal she struck with EU leaders last month. Facing her biggest crisis since assuming office a month after Britons voted in June 2016 to leave Europe, May vowed to fight the coup attempt inside her own Conservative Party `with everything I`ve got`. AFPWhat happens to the Brexit process now, as prime minister Theresa May fights a challenge to her leadership? The embattled leader toured European capitals on Tuesday in an attempt to seek concessions on her Brexit deal, less than four months before the March 29 date when Britain is set to leave the European Union. But the EU has vowed not to budge, and she came home to a potential leadership challenge. She said she will contest Wednesday’s challenge and, if victorious, plans to table a vote on her Brexit deal some time before January 21.If she loses, the leadership election could take days or even weeks into the New Year and could potentially derail the Brexit timetable. Here are some of the most probable scenarios:- Tweaks to the deal -Victory for May over her rebel MPs will mean she cannot face another no-confidence challenge from within her party for 12 months, giving her some breathing space as she attempts to tweak her deal and get it through parliament.May held talks with European counterparts on Tuesday seeking “further assurances” over the so-called “backstop plan” for the Irish border as she attempts to drum up support for her deal. She will meet with EU leaders to discuss Brexit during a summit in Brussels on Thursday.European sources privately say only clarifications or tweaks in the accompanying declaration on post-Brexit ties might be possible. But that could be enough to sway MPs, particularly if the extended uncertainty takes a disastrous toll on the economy and financial markets.- Norway option -If her deal is rejected, MPs are set to take more control over the whole process. They could push for a “plan B”, which would see Britain adopt a softer Brexit, such as staying in the EU’s satellite trading bloc the European Economic Area — the so-called Norway option.Although being in the single market would require maintaining freedom of movement of EU citizens into Britain — a contentious issue for pro-Brexit voters — this approach is considered more likely to command a majority in parliament and potentially pass a vote.Another potential obstacle, however, is that Britain would have to continue paying large amounts of money into the EU budget, which would prove hugely unpopular.- No-deal Brexit -Britain has legislated to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019, after triggering Article 50 — the treaty mechanism used to exit the bloc — two years prior.May has warned that if MPs vote down her plan the country risks crashing out on this date with no agreement. That would sever ties overnight with Britain’s closest trading partner, amid fears of grounded flights, medicine shortages and gridlocked ports and motorways. If May loses Wednesday’s vote, most of the favourites to replace her are pro-Brexit, increasing the chances that Britain would leave without a deal.- Second referendum -Calls for a new referendum now attract cross-party support from dozens of MPs.May has repeatedly ruled out another vote, but could face pressure to call one if Britain slips into political paralysis.Supporters of a second referendum received a boost from the European Court of Justice on Monday, which ruled that Britain has the unilateral right to revoke its Brexit decision. It could take weeks to elect a new leader if May is deposed, and Justice Secretary David Gauke warned on Wednesday that this could lead to the deadline being extended.- General election -The prime minister could try to break the parliamentary deadlock by calling a general election — but would need the backing of two-thirds of all MPs.Even if she survives Wednesday’s party vote, a simple majority of all lawmakers could also topple her government with a vote of no confidence, with some opposition MPs on Monday calling for such a move in parliament. But a Labour spokesperson said that the party would only submit such a motion “when we judge it most likely to be successful”.Losing a confidence vote tabled by the opposition could lead to the formation of a new government — possibly a coalition of parties with a new leader — if MPs agreed on it within two weeks.Otherwise, a general election would be called.last_img

Woodson Set Out to ReEducate the MisEducated Negro

first_imgWestern education, from the elementary through the tertiary levels, had “mis-educated” many a Negro with propaganda and “heresy” about their so-called inferiority and lack of worth, Woodson posited. Even Harvard University, supposedly a bastion of first-tier scholarship, progressive thought and enlightenment, had “ruined more Negro minds than bad whiskey,” Woodson is quoted as saying. The Black scholar elaborated on his theory in the seminal tome, The Mis-Education of the Negro.“The so-called modern education, with all its defects… does others so much more good than it does the Negro, because it has been worked out in conformity to the needs of those who have enslaved and oppressed weaker peoples,” the book’s preface reads. “For example, the philosophy and ethics resulting from our educational system have justified slavery, peonage, segregation and lynching…. Negroes daily educated in the tenets of such a religion of the strong have accepted the status of the weak as divinely ordained, and during the last three generations of their nominal freedom they have done practically nothing to change it.”Woodson goes on to explain, “No systematic effort toward change has been possible, for, taught the same economics, history, philosophy, literature and religion which have established the present code of morals, the Negro’s mind has been brought under the control of his oppressor. The problem of holding the Negro down, therefore, is easily solved. When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand or go yonder. He will find his ‘proper place’ and will stay in it. You do not need to send him to the back door. He will go without being told. In fact, if there is no back door, he will cut one for his special benefit. His education makes it necessary.”Black elevation and empowerment—in fact the very survival of the race—therefore, began with a sound education that included the teaching oftrue Black history, Woodson said. The Misses Cooke’s school room, Freedman’s Bureau, Richmond, Va., illustrated in Frank Leslie’s illustrated newspaper. Carter G. Woodson said the mis-education of lacks regarding their history had been used as a tool of control. (Jas. E. Taylor/Library of Congress)“If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated,” Woodson said in one of his articles. “The American Indian left no continuous record. He did not appreciate the value of tradition; and where is he today? The Hebrew keenly appreciated the value of tradition, as is attested by the Bible itself. In spite of worldwide persecution, therefore, he is a great factor in our civilization.”Woodson began his quest to chronicle Black history and to legitimize scholarship in that field throughout his college years, but was often ridiculed and dissuaded by his professors and others. But in 1915, Woodson defies his critics—those leaders of Western academia and politics and a leery public who had long insisted Blacks had no history—by publishing his first text on African-American history, The Education of the Negro Prior to 1861. He takes it even further, later that year, when he also establishes the Association for the Study of Negro of Life and History (which later becomes the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.) Often going without a salary, Woodson led the organization’s efforts to research, uncover and publish their findings about Black life and history in the Journal of Negro History, a quarterly academic journal launched in 1916.In 1926, Woodson and the ASNLH sponsored the first Negro History Week in February, which was meant to coincide with the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, both venerated figures in the Black community. As with his earlier efforts to promote Black history, the observance initially was not widely received.“There was a push in America at the time, particularly within academia, to unify all history as one—to create just one American story of the past, and usually that did not include Black history. When people did speak about Black history back then it was denigrated,” said Kendi, the Albany university professor. “For him to say we should appreciate it and celebrate it was revolutionary.”Woodson’s vision of the Negro History Week went beyond his goal of educating African Americans about themselves—though that was part of his aim; it was also about educating others about the value of Blacks’ contributions to America and the world.According to a Jan. 23, 1932 AFRO article, Woodson explained that the celebration of Negro History Week would be for nought if Black, White and all children were not given a chance to learn about all aspects of Black history in their schools.“Unless Negro History Week can be used to accomplish such a purpose, the mere celebration would be meaningless. To have numerous essays and speeches on what we have done while failing to do this thing which is necessary for our present good will mean absolute failure so far as this observance is concerned,” he is quoted as saying in the article.“The watchword throughout this season, therefore, should be to uproot propaganda in the minds of students and place in their hands certain works to inform them as to the contributions of all races. Interracial goodwill will be thereby stimulated, that this country may become a land of happiness and prosperity.”With the passage of time, Negro History Week caught on, according to an essay by Daryl Michael Scott, president of ASALH: Black history clubs sprang up; teachers demanded materials to instruct their pupils; and progressive Whites, not simply White scholars and philanthropists, stepped forward to endorse the effort. The “Black Awakening” and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s further amplified the importance of and interest in the historic contributions of African Americans. And, in 1976, the celebration was expanded to a month through a proclamation by President Gerald Ford, who urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”Though Black History Month has since become a national fixture, there are some who question whether the observance is still necessary or even beneficial in what some have claimed as a post-racial society.Experts say that is not surprising as it mirrors what some Woodson detractors have said from the beginning.“If you look back now at his lifetime, most people assume his movement was widely embraced when it was not,” Kendi said. “He received a huge amount of resistance both within the Black community and outside.”For example, among assimilationists, anything that played up racial differences was a no-no.“There have always been Black people who view Black progress as Black people assimilating with Whiteness,” Kendi added. In the presence of such self-effacing thought, persistent socioeconomic disparities and racism, Woodson would have likely argued that Black History Month, and its spotlighting of Black history and achievement, is very much an ongoing necessity, Kendi said.“Carter G. Woodson would have looked at the persistent disparities and said that clearly we are not an inclusive society [and that] so long as we have White Americans, Black Americans and those of other races who see Black people as inferior there is still a need for multiculturalism and the study of Black history.” Carter G. Woodson and the then-Association for the Study of Negro Life and History launched Negro History Week in February 1926. (AFRO Archives)Socrates, the renowned Greek philosopher and sage, once urged his followers to “Know thyself.” Thousands of years later, that advice continued to resonate, becoming the underpinnings of Carter G. Woodson’s theories about the study of Black history.“Carter G. Woodson was a visionary,” said Ibram Kendi, assistant professor of Africana Studies at the University of Albany. “He essentiallysought to build within the Black community a greater consciousness of their history—the successes, failures, triumphs—all the complexities of African-American history.”By all accounts, a young Woodson grew up poor in physical assets but rich in knowledge and wisdom. At his father’s knee, he learned about self- and race-pride…, that going through someone’s back door—a sign of inferiority—was never an option, no matter the cost. And from the Civil War veterans like his father, he also learned the lessons of self-determination and the value of Black contributions to the past and ongoing American story. But, as Woodson looked within his community he noted those values of self-love, pride, self-knowledge, self-determination and self-worth were missing from too many. And, he placed the blame squarely on the “defects” of Western education, which was used as a tool to maintain the status quo.“He believed that the negative ideas (Black) people had internalized about themselves were because of their ignorance about their own history,” said Professor Kendi.last_img read more

Switching over to healthy food

first_imgWhen it comes to new trends in dining out, customers are switching over to healthy and natural food (pesticide free) more than ever. They are always on the lookout for wellness alternatives in their food. Sous Chef Prem k Pogakula, The Imperial says, “The preference this year  will be more for GMO free ingredients and as I see it, things will become more intense in the coming years. With time crunch in hand and both the partners working in  a nuclear family scenario, one pot meals are super easy, highly nutritious with adequate protein and starch content and are perfect for a quick meal. You can also call it as Urban cooking.” Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’“Food is now becoming a highly rated genre and food connoisseurs are always on the lookout for old, forgotten and classic global recipes as they possess simple and straight flavours. People prefer them over fusion cuisine (which is somehow still a matter of confusion and needs to evolve). Only experimented cuisine calls for fusion food on your palate. It can never ever replace or take over the classic cuisine,” he said. The Chef further added, “I also strongly believe that the dining scenario in the city is in for a change in the coming year. Experiments are still on but the vital aspect is that old and lost cuisines are being re-discovered. Chefs are working with emotional food along with childhood or regional memories. Your palate can be a sweet creation when you are delighted or spicy, peppery food when anger takes over you which will also see a rise.  Food memories specifically offer a magical feeling.”last_img read more

Faces of friends look happier than strangers

first_imgPeople are more likely to perceive familiar faces to be happier than those of strangers, even when both express the same emotions, a study suggests. Familiarity – just having ‘expertise’ with someone else’s face through repeated exposure – affects the happiness you perceive in subsequent facial expressions from that person, researchers said.”Familiarity not only influences traditional ratings of liking, attractiveness, but also impacts ‘deeper’ perceptions of the actual emotion you can extract from that person,” said Evan Carr of Columbia Business School in the US. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfResearchers including those from University of California, San Diego in the US, morphed images of male and female faces to create faces that varied in the type and degree of emotion expressed. This process resulted in a continuum of morphed faces that ranged from 50 per cent angry to neutral to 50 per cent happy. The team divided the images into two sets. A total of 50 undergraduate student participants came to the lab for a “memory task.” Each participant saw a series of images – the neutral expressions from one of the two image sets – and was tasked with tracking the colour and number of squares that appeared randomly on some images. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveParticipants then viewed a series of face pairs in a perceptual task, where they had to indicate whether the happier face was above or below the line shown on screen. Each pair included a familiar and an unfamiliar face and the faces showed the same objective level of emotion.Researchers found that participants were more likely to identify the familiar face as the happier one in the pair, despite the fact that the faces showed the same emotion to the same degree. They were also more likely to identify the familiar face as happier when the faces were 50 per cent happy than when they were 25 per cent happy, researchers said. In a second experiment, the team asked 40 undergraduate participants to look at a series of faces and decide whether each face was either “happy or angry.” Researchers found that the results replicated those of the first experiment, participants were more likely to identify familiar faces as happy compared with unfamiliar ones, but only when the faces were emotionally neutral or positive. Their estimates of how happy the faces were increased as the positive features increased. The data indicated that familiarity actually shifted how participants perceived the emotional content of the faces – that is, a familiar face needed to have fewer objectively happy features for it to be classified as happy compared with an unfamiliar face. The study was published in the journal Psychological Science.last_img read more

Microsoft announces Game stack with Xbox Live integration to Android and iOS

first_imgMicrosoft has good news for all the game developers out there. It launched a new initiative, called Microsoft Game Stack yesterday, which includes an amalgamation of different Microsoft tools and services into a single robust ecosystem to ‘empower game developers’. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a rookie indie developer or an AAA studio, this developer-focused platform will make the game development process ten times easier for you. The main goal of Game Stack is to help developers easily find different tools and services required for game development at one spot. These tools range from Azure, PlayFab, DirectX, Visual Studio, to  Xbox Live, App Center, and Havok. Cloud plays a major role in Game Stack and it makes use of Azure to fulfill this requirement. Search for oneway fares to Canada sees huge increase on US election
